AND STILL: ARRIVING

POEMS & PROSE

A powerful literary collection about love, survival, and what makes a life meaningful.

In And Still: Arriving, Dennis Freire brings together poetry, memoir, reflective essays, and short fiction in a deeply affecting exploration of family, serious illness, childhood trauma, faith, memory, and hope. Written while living with Stage IV cancer, these pieces trace the author's journey through treatment, loss, healing, and the sustaining power of human connection.

From gardens and mountain landscapes to hospital rooms and family kitchens, Freire discovers profound meaning in ordinary moments. His writing is at once intimate and universal, balancing vulnerability with wisdom and sorrow with gratitude. The collection culminates in a series of original stories that extend its themes into richly imagined narrative worlds.

For readers of literary nonfiction, contemporary poetry, narrative medicine, memoir, and inspirational literature, And Still: Arriving offers a thoughtful and deeply human meditation on endurance, acceptance, and the enduring possibility of grace.

  • “Already in the mountains / the frost is walking this way. / I can feel its cold breath / in the shortening days.”

    —My Harvest Moon

  • “But tonight the fields are silver, / and there is still time / to carry one more basket home, / still time to be thankful / for what the earth has given.”

    —My Harvest Moon

  • “California poppies / volunteering their glad song, gaining purchase / in sidewalk cracks, roadside soil, among mustard, / dandelion, ice plants green and thick, / a community chorus singing louder than the flora / in their concourse.”

    —School Bells (Wild Hyacinth)

  • “I know it wasn’t about the lunch / it is rarely about what it looks like it’s about / we are unreliable narrators / of our own falling apart / but I fell apart anyway”

—What Mortality Tastes Like On A Tuesday

  • “Death does not stand at the door. / It keeps a field away, leaning on a fence post / in horizontal afternoon light / watching without urgency.”

    —Heartwood

  • “I rise. / Not healed. Not heroic. / Just risen, the way any living thing / rises into what light is available.”

    —Heartwood

  • “And still: arriving. / Month after month, / the doors part / as if they are glad, / as if the world, still, / wants to let me in.”

    —And Still: Arriving

  • “This is the most human thing / to look at what cannot be survived as a whole / and say: / We shall go in pieces. / We shall take turns. / We shall carry each other / from the inside.”
