about Antimony Press
an·ti·mo·ny | noun | US \ˈan-tǝ-ˌmō-nē\ · UK \an-ˈti-mǝ-nē
Chemical symbol Sb · atomic number 51 · from Latin stibium
Antimony is an unusual name for a literary press.
Neither fully metal nor nonmetal, it exists somewhere in between. Rarely found alone in nature, it is seldom used by itself. Instead, antimony is valued for what it contributes to other materials. When combined with softer metals, it adds strength, durability, and definition.
For centuries, antimony played a quiet but essential role in printing. In traditional type metal, it helped molten alloy fill the finest details of a mold, producing letters that were sharp, clear, and lasting. Though largely unseen, it helped give printed words their form.
That seemed an appropriate name for a literary press.
At Antimony Press, we believe the finest books emerge through partnership. Authors bring imagination, experience, insight, and voice. A publisher contributes editing, design, production, and care. Together, they create books that reach readers and endure beyond their moment.
There is another reason we chose the name.
A persistent folk etymology suggests that antimony means "not alone." The interpretation is almost certainly mistaken, yet we find the idea meaningful. The word's actual history traces through the Latin stibium and earlier names for the mineral from which antimony is derived.
Even so, the metaphor resonates.
Antimony rarely occurs by itself and does its best work in company with other elements. Books are much the same. Writers, editors, designers, printers, booksellers, and readers all play a part in bringing a work to life.
Every lasting book is the work of many hands.
That conviction lies at the heart of Antimony Press.
We exist to help writers shape their work into its strongest and most enduring form: carefully edited, thoughtfully designed, and beautifully produced. We believe publishing should amplify a writer's voice rather than compete with it. Our role is not to stand in front of the work, but to stand behind it.
Like antimony in type metal, we are not interested in overshadowing the words. Our purpose is simpler and more important:
To help a writer's voice hold its shape, keep its edge, and leave a lasting impression.
Thank you for visiting Antimony Press. We are honored to work alongside writers and grateful to the readers who give books their lasting life.
Best regards,
Publisher, Antimony Press
